Copycat Fashion and Heartfelt Friendships: A Reflection on Positive Influence

Updated: Mar 27

In our daycare, there’s a special kind of magic that happens when preschoolers find their best friends. Their bonds form quickly, sometimes quietly and sometimes with bursts of energy that ripple through the entire classroom. Recently, I watched as two little girls, Zaya and Anya, created a friendship so strong that they’ve started dressing alike — and it's become a heartwarming reflection of the power of positive influence.

It all started one morning when Zaya arrived in her Minnie Mouse jacket, her smile bright and her excitement contagious. Anya took one look at her friend and gasped, "I want one like that too!" The next day, Anya showed up proudly wearing her own version — a dress just as pink and equally sparkly. The giggles and twirls that followed were contagious, a joyful reminder that these simple moments of connection often become the memories children cherish most.

Soon enough, the spirit of friendship caught on — suddenly, we started seeing matching unicorn leggings and identical hair clips across different friend groups. Some parents might see this as competition, but to us, it’s a beautiful example of positive influence — a kind of "copycat" behavior that builds confidence and connection.

Preschool friendships are unique because they’re often shaped by admiration. If one child masters the monkey bars, suddenly half the class is eager to try. If a student learns to write their name, others follow suit. It’s not rivalry — it’s inspiration. These moments remind us that children are constantly learning from one another, not just through lessons and activities, but through the way they connect and celebrate each other’s achievements.

Of course, not every moment is harmonious. Preschoolers are still learning to navigate social dynamics, and sometimes those matching outfits lead to debates — who wore it better, who picked it first, or whose hair clip sparkles more. Yet, in those moments of competition, we see growth. Learning to resolve these tiny conflicts is just as important as learning ABCs and 123s.

Moments like these remind me that the greatest influence isn’t always from teachers or parents — sometimes it comes from the child sitting right beside you. Watching these friendships bloom is one of the sweetest parts of our work, and proof that positive influence has a way of leaving a lasting impact.

So, if you notice your preschooler suddenly wants to wear the same shoes as their friend or insists on packing the same snack — celebrate it. It’s their way of building friendships, finding confidence, and learning that being part of a community means lifting each other up, one sparkly dress at a time.
