What I hope families feel when they enter Nihao

A child and parent arrive at a welcoming school doorway, where an educator greets the child at eye level.

When families begin exploring Nihao, they bring hopes for their child and questions about the people who will care for them. I want there to be room for both.

I hope a visit helps a family begin to picture their child here: finding something interesting, getting to know a teacher, and becoming part of our small school community. I also hope they feel comfortable telling us what they are still wondering about.

Creating that sense of welcome is part of the educational environment I want Nihao to offer.

A place to get to know each other

Families have told us they love Nihao's natural environment and the way we make room for play. Those qualities matter to me because they shape what a family can experience when they visit.

I want them to have time to look around and notice what draws their child's attention. I want there to be space for a conversation about how we teach, how children spend their day, and what the family is hoping to find.

A parent might be thinking about their child's first experience away from home. Another might be curious about Mandarin, or about what a mixed-age setting could feel like for their child. Each question gives us a place to begin getting to know one another.

The child's life comes with them

Every child arrives with a life beyond school. Home languages, familiar routines, interests, and the people they love are part of that life.

At Nihao, Mandarin and English are woven into everyday care and play. I want families to feel welcome to talk with us about their own language experiences, including when Mandarin is entirely new to them.

I also want to hear the small details that help us understand a child. What do they enjoy doing at home? How do they ask for help? What does a parent notice when their child is getting comfortable in a new place?

Family partnership begins with conversations like these. Over time, I want our observations at school and a family's observations at home to help us understand the child more fully.

Room for an honest conversation

Choosing an early learning environment is a personal decision. Families need enough understanding to consider how a school's approach fits their child and their everyday life.

I want Nihao's small, multilingual, mixed-age environment to be clear to prospective families. I hope they can recognize the place we give to play, the attention we bring to relationships, and the role families have in our community.

A visit is an opportunity to explore those things together. It is also a chance for us to listen. What matters most to this family? What would help them feel comfortable taking the next step?

When a family leaves Nihao, I hope they carry a clearer picture of our school and a sense that their questions were welcome. That is the beginning of the relationship I want us to build.
